Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 Officially in Production – A New Story of Revenge & Redemption in Night City

Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2

In a surprise reveal at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER officially confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is returning for a second season. The announcement has sent waves through the anime and gaming communities, as fans eagerly await the next chapter in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.

However, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 will not continue the tragic story of David Martinez and Lucy. Instead, the new season will introduce a completely standalone narrative set once again in the chaotic world of Night City, exploring new characters, deeper emotions, and even darker themes.

🎥 New Creative Team, Same Legendary Studio

The second season will be a 10-episode series, just like its predecessor, but with a fresh creative direction. Taking the helm as director is Kai Ikarashi, who previously directed the explosive Episode 6 (“Girl on Fire”) in Season 1. He replaces Hiroyuki Imaishi, who remains involved in a supervisory role.

The series is once again being animated by Studio TRIGGER, the powerhouse studio behind hits like Kill la Kill and Promare. The animation style will retain the same high-octane energy, stylized visuals, and vibrant aesthetic that made Edgerunners a cult favorite.

Showrunner and writer Bartosz Sztybor—a Hugo Award-winning author and writer for Cyberpunk 2077—returns to guide the series, promising a bold new story filled with emotional highs and brutal consequences. Character designer Kanno Ichigo and screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka are also back on board.

🌑 What to Expect: Revenge, Redemption, and Raw Emotion

Unlike Season 1, which followed a young man’s descent into the cybernetic underworld, Season 2 will delve into the darker aspects of human emotion, especially the duality between revenge and redemption.

“This season is about scars. Both physical and emotional,” said Sztybor at the panel discussion during Anime Expo. “Night City doesn’t forget, and it doesn’t forgive. But it can sometimes offer a second chance — at a price.”

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the creators have promised a more emotionally raw, bloodier, and psychologically intense experience than ever before.

📺 Netflix Exclusive & No Release Date Yet

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 is currently in production, and though no official release date has been announced, it will premiere exclusively on Netflix once completed.

At Anime Expo, fans were treated to a teaser poster and brief production art previewed behind closed doors. The new characters appear heavily augmented and battle-scarred, hinting at a much more grounded and visceral tale of survival in the neon-drenched city.

🧠 Legacy of Season 1

When Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuted in 2022, it quickly became one of the most talked-about anime of the year. Its success even helped revive interest in the Cyberpunk 2077 game, driving millions of players back to the dystopian open world. The first season went on to win Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Awards and garnered massive acclaim from critics and fans alike.

With Season 2 promising to go even deeper, TRIGGER and CD PROJEKT RED seem determined to elevate the Edgerunners legacy while exploring new narrative territory.

If Season 1 was a neon-soaked tragedy, Season 2 looks to be a dark and bloody redemption arc wrapped in chrome and code. Though David and Lucy’s story is over, Night City’s pulse beats louder than ever, and a new story is ready to unfold in the shadows.
